Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Public Health
  • Health Services Research

Background:

  • Prostate cancer is a leading cause of cancer death in Australia.
  • The 2016 Australian Clinical Practice Guidelines for Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) testing aimed to improve early detection.
  • This study evaluates the implementation and impact of these guidelines.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the effectiveness of the 2016 Australian Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) testing guidelines.
  • To understand consumer experiences with PSA testing and guideline implementation.
  • To identify areas for improvement in future prostate cancer management strategies.

Main Methods:

  • Thematic analysis of public consultation responses.
  • A national Call for Submissions invited consumer experiences with PSA testing.
  • Seven questions guided respondent feedback on guideline implementation.

Main Results:

  • Consumers found the 2016 guidelines ineffective due to negative framing, poor uptake by primary care, and low awareness.
  • Most men reported missed testing opportunities, leading to late-stage diagnoses.
  • Suggestions included a consumer companion, regular reviews, and national education programs.

Conclusions:

  • Effective prostate cancer management requires stakeholder alignment with updated guidelines.
  • Future guideline implementation necessitates well-resourced education for the public and clinicians.
  • Consistent adoption across medical groups is crucial for improving prostate cancer outcomes.
