Randomized Experiments

6.7K
The randomization process involves assigning study participants randomly to experimental or control groups based on their probability of being equally assigned. Randomization is meant to eliminate selection bias and balance known and unknown confounding factors so that the control group is similar to the treatment group as much as possible. A computer program and a random number generator can be used to assign participants to groups in a way that minimizes bias.

Area of Science:

  • Digital mental health
  • Psychology
  • Mobile health interventions

Background:

  • A research-to-retail gap exists in mental well-being apps, with many not publicly available or tested.
  • Few apps offer multicomponent interventions, despite their proven efficacy.
  • ReNeuWell addresses this by offering a validated measure and personalized activities.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the protocol for a randomized controlled trial (RCT) of the ReNeuWell app.
  • To test the efficacy of ReNeuWell in improving mental well-being in general adult users.
  • To compare ReNeuWell users against an active control group.

Main Methods:

  • A preregistered RCT recruiting general population iPhone users from the Apple App Store.
  • Participants are randomized to ReNeuWell or an active control app.
  • Outcomes measured via in-app surveys at weeks 1, 6, and 12, analyzed with linear mixed models.

Main Results:

  • Hypothesized that ReNeuWell users will show significant increases in mental well-being.
  • Hypothesized that ReNeuWell users will show significant decreases in mental distress.
  • Trial outcomes will be published in peer-reviewed literature and on the registry website.

Conclusions:

  • ReNeuWell is a novel iPhone app designed to measure and improve mental well-being.
  • The study protocol outlines a rigorous RCT to evaluate its effectiveness.
  • Findings will contribute to understanding digital interventions for mental well-being.
