    Area of Science:

    • Neurology
    • Epidemiology

    Background:

    • Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurological disease.
    • Understanding the geographical distribution and incidence of MS is crucial for public health.
    • Previous incidence rates in South Africa were considered low.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate a potential increase in multiple sclerosis incidence in South Africa.
    • To establish the current incidence rate among a specific demographic in Pretoria.

    Main Methods:

    • Prospective study over 12 months.
    • Inclusion of all newly-diagnosed white Afrikaans-speaking patients from Pretoria.
    • Statistical analysis to compare observed vs. expected incidence.

    Main Results:

    • Five new cases of multiple sclerosis were diagnosed.
    • This represents a statistically significant increase (P < 0.001) compared to the expected rate of 0.2/100,000/year.
    • Indicates a potential rising trend in MS incidence within the studied population.

    Conclusions:

    • There is a significant increase in multiple sclerosis incidence in white Afrikaans-speaking individuals in Pretoria.
    • This finding warrants further investigation into the causes and implications of rising MS rates in South Africa.
    • Public health strategies may need to be re-evaluated based on these new epidemiological data.
