    Summary

Isolated syncope, a transient loss of consciousness, was evaluated in over 5,000 adults. This study found no increased risk of stroke, heart attack, or death associated with isolated syncope over 26 years.

    Area of Science:

    • Epidemiology
    • Cardiology
    • Neurology

    Background:

    • Syncope, or fainting, is a common condition requiring epidemiologic investigation.
    • Understanding the long-term prognosis of syncope is crucial for patient management.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the epidemiologic characteristics of syncope.
    • To determine the association between isolated syncope and subsequent cardiovascular or neurologic events, as well as mortality.

    Main Methods:

    • A prospective study evaluated 2336 men and 2873 women aged 30-62 for syncope over 26 years.
    • Data on cardiac/neurologic morbidity, mortality, stroke, myocardial infarction, and all-cause mortality were recorded.
    • Isolated syncope was defined as transient loss of consciousness without prior or concurrent neurologic, coronary, or cardiovascular disease.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Main Results:

    • Syncope was reported by 3.0% of men and 3.5% of women.
    • Isolated syncope criteria were met by 79% of men and 88% of women with syncope.
    • No excess risk of stroke, transient ischemic attack, or myocardial infarction was observed in individuals with isolated syncope.
    • Isolated syncope was not associated with increased all-cause or cardiovascular mortality, including sudden death.

    Conclusions:

    • Isolated syncope, in the absence of underlying cardiovascular or neurologic conditions, appears to have a benign long-term prognosis.
    • This finding suggests that isolated syncope may not be an indicator of increased risk for major adverse cardiovascular or cerebrovascular events.
