Tumor Immunotherapy

400
Immunotherapy is a treatment that boosts or manipulates the immune system to fight diseases, including cancer. For instance, by stimulating an immune response through vaccinations against viruses that cause cancers, like hepatitis B virus and human papillomavirus, these diseases can be prevented. Nonetheless, some cancer cells can avoid the immune system due to their rapid mutation and division. The immune response to many cancers involves three phases: elimination, equilibrium, and escape.

Immunodeficiency Diseases

827
Immunodeficiency disorders are conditions in which the immune system's ability to fight infectious disease and cancer is compromised or entirely absent. The immune system comprises a complex network of cells, tissues, and organs that work together to protect the body from potentially harmful invaders. When this system is deficient or not functioning properly, it leaves the body susceptible to infections, diseases, or other complications.
There are three main causes of immunodeficiency...

Summary

Immunotherapy-related sialadenitis, an inflammation of salivary glands, can occur during cancer treatment. This case highlights a patient who developed this condition while on ipilimumab/nivolumab therapy for melanoma.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Immunology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Sialadenitis is a common salivary gland inflammation.
  • Cancer immunotherapies, like ipilimumab/nivolumab, harness the immune system to fight tumors.
  • Metastatic melanoma requires aggressive treatment strategies.

Observation:

  • A 21-year-old female with metastatic melanoma presented with neck swelling.
  • Computed tomography (CT) revealed inflammation in both submandibular salivary glands.
  • Symptoms were attributed to the combination ipilimumab/nivolumab treatment.

Findings:

  • The patient was diagnosed with immunotherapy-related sialadenitis.
  • The condition specifically affected the submandibular glands.
  • Prompt response to systemic corticosteroid treatment was observed.

Implications:

  • This case expands the known side effects of ipilimumab/nivolumab therapy.
  • Early recognition and management of immunotherapy-related sialadenitis are crucial.
  • Corticosteroids appear effective in treating this adverse event.
