Summary

Patient anxiety before intraocular injections is common. Younger age, fewer prior injections, and no history of cataract surgery correlate with higher anxiety levels, highlighting the need for better patient information.

Background:

Intraocular injection therapy is a common treatment for various eye conditions.
Patient anxiety can impact treatment adherence and outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

To analyze patient anxiety levels associated with intraocular injections.
To identify sociodemographic, disease, and treatment-related risk factors for this anxiety.

Main Methods:

The study included 369 patients receiving intravitreal injections (ranibizumab, aflibercept, bevacizumab, dexamethasone implants).
Anxiety was measured using the Amsterdam Pre-operative Anxiety and Information Scale (APAIS) and Visual Analog Scale Anxiety (VASA).
Data were analyzed against patient age, sex, indication, drug, injection history, and lens status.

Main Results:

15.4% of patients reported high anxiety via VASA (≥6); 43.9% had high APAIS anxiety scores (≥11).
Higher anxiety correlated negatively with patient age and number of previous injections.
Patients without prior cataract surgery reported significantly higher anxiety levels.

Conclusions:

Patient anxiety is a significant factor in intraocular injection therapy.
Improving patient information and further research are crucial for stress reduction.
