    Background:

    • Accurate measurement of caloric intake is crucial for nutritional research and clinical practice.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess the validity of laboratory-based caloric intake measurements against free-living conditions.
    • To determine if controlled dietary intake in a lab setting can accurately reflect habitual energy consumption.

    Main Methods:

    • Eight healthy adults (4 men, 4 women) participated in a 4-day free-living dietary intake period (Period 1).
    • Participants then consumed all meals in a laboratory setting for a subsequent 4-day period (Period 2).
    • Body weight and food intake (caloric intake) were meticulously recorded and analyzed for both periods.

    Main Results:

    • No significant changes in body weight were observed during either study period.
    • Paired caloric intake showed no significant differences between the free-living (Period 1) and laboratory (Period 2) conditions.
    • A high intraclass correlation coefficient (ri = .80, p < .005) indicated strong agreement between the two measurement settings.

    • Dietary intake within a laboratory setting provides a reliable approximation of caloric intake under free-living conditions.
    • Laboratory-based assessments are a valid method for measuring caloric intake in controlled environments.
    • Findings support the use of laboratory settings for accurate dietary energy intake studies.
