Long-term depression, or LTD, is one of the ways by which synaptic plasticity—changes in the strength of chemical synapses—can occur in the brain. LTD is the process of synaptic weakening that occurs over time between pre and postsynaptic neuronal connections. Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the effectiveness of the Effective Mood Management After Stroke (EMMAS) program, a routine PSD screening and intervention service.
  • To measure the impact of EMMAS on the long-term outcomes of stroke survivors.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional, case-control study comparing propensity-score matched samples of stroke patients.
  • Inclusion of patients from a tertiary hospital's inpatient rehabilitation setting, pre- and post-EMMAS implementation.
  • Poor long-term outcome defined as death, institutionalization, need for a full-time caregiver, or depression screening positive >5 years post-stroke.

  • 115 matched samples (demographics, stroke severity) were analyzed.
