Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze burnout and professional stress trends among US Veterans Health Administration (VHA) health care workers from 2018 to 2023.
  • To identify specific occupations with significant changes in burnout and associated factors.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective cohort study using annual organization-wide survey data from 140 VHA medical centers (2018-2023).
  • Self-reported burnout and professional stress measures were analyzed.
  • Trends were examined by occupation, telework status, and geographic region.

Main Results:

  • Burnout rates increased from 30.4% in 2018 to a peak of 39.8% in 2022, decreasing to 35.4% in 2023.
  • Professional stress rates peaked in 2020 (32.0%) and decreased to 21.4% in 2023.
  • Primary care physicians reported the highest burnout (46.2%-57.6%). Mental health, dental, and rehabilitation services saw significant burnout increases. Teleworking was associated with lower burnout.

Conclusions:

  • While VHA health care worker burnout and stress have decreased post-pandemic, burnout levels remain higher than pre-pandemic.
  • Interventions have shown some promise, but further efforts are needed to reduce burnout to pre-pandemic levels.
  • Targeted strategies are essential for high-risk occupations.
