Summary

Serum survivin and survivin-lymphocyte ratio (SLR) show potential as biomarkers for early detection and monitoring of malignant nasal tumors and idiopathic rhinitis in dogs. These markers may aid in identifying disease, even in early stages.

Background:

  • Nasal cavity diseases (ND) in dogs, particularly malignant nasal tumors, pose a significant health concern.
  • Early diagnosis of nasal tumors is crucial as prognosis correlates with tumor size, but current methods require anesthesia.
  • There is an unmet need for non-invasive diagnostic serum markers for early detection and therapeutic monitoring of canine nasal diseases.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate serum concentrations of survivin, Ki-67, and thymidine kinase 1 (TK1), and the survivin-lymphocyte ratio (SLR) as potential diagnostic markers for canine nasal diseases.
  • To compare these markers between dogs with malignant ND, benign ND, and healthy controls.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective, blinded study included 55 dogs with nasal discharge and 10 healthy controls.
  • Serum samples were analyzed for survivin, Ki-67, and TK1; SLR was calculated.
  • Dogs underwent comprehensive diagnostic workup, including whole-body CT; exclusions included concomitant diseases or prior steroid treatment.

Main Results:

  • Survivin and SLR were significantly elevated in dogs with malignant ND (sarcomas and carcinomas) and idiopathic rhinitis (IR) compared to controls.
  • No significant correlation was found between survivin/SLR and tumor size in malignant nasal tumors.
  • TK1 concentrations did not differ significantly among groups; Ki-67 was lower in benign tumors compared to carcinomas and other conditions.

Conclusions:

  • Elevated serum survivin and SLR can be detected in dogs with malignant nasal tumors and IR, suggesting their potential as biomarkers.
  • Survivin and SLR may aid in the early detection of nasal tumors, irrespective of size.
  • Survivin and SLR could serve as valuable targets for disease monitoring and therapeutic intervention in dogs with nasal tumors and IR.
