OPTICAL COHERENCE TOMOGRAPHY INTERFACE REFLECTION IMAGE ASSOCIATED WITH INTRAVITREAL GAS
1Prism Vision Group, South Jersey Eye Physicians Division, Moorestown, New Jersey; and.
Purpose:
To describe an optical coherence tomography (OCT) interface reflection image simulating a full-thickness macular hole, in a postoperative eye with intravitreal gas.
Methods:
A retrospective case report using postoperative retina images and spectral-domain OCT (Cirrus HD-OCT 6000; Carl Zeiss Meditec, Inc, Dublin, CA) in a partially gas-filled eye.
Results:
The OCT interface reflection image, captured anterior to the macula, mimicked Type 2 closure of a central full-thickness macular hole. Retrospective inspection of the slice navigator which was associated with the image generation disclosed the image was because of interface reflection of the closed eccentric hole rather than a direct image of the fovea.
Conclusion:
Clinicians should be aware that OCT interface reflection images may be obtained when the OCT light beam reflects off a fluid-gas interface. Unless recognized, these images can confuse the clinical picture and postoperative planning.
