Background:

  • Thyroid eye disease (TED) is an autoimmune disorder causing orbital inflammation and tissue remodeling.
  • The precise pathogenesis of TED remains unclear, though autoantibodies to thyroid-stimulating hormone receptor (TSHR) and insulin-like growth factor-1 receptor (IGF-1R) are implicated.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the potential role of viral infections in the development of TED.
  • To explore molecular mimicry between viral proteins and TED-associated autoantigens.

Main Methods:

  • Bioinformatic analysis was used to identify sequence homologies between TSHR/IGF-1R and viral proteomes.
  • Enzyme-linked immunoassays (ELISAs) quantified antiviral antibody titers in orbital adipose tissue from TED patients and controls.
  • Demographic and clinical data were reviewed.

Main Results:

  • Conserved motifs were found between TSHR/IGF-1R and the human papillomavirus 18 (HPV18) L1 capsid protein.
  • Elevated HPV18 L1 immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibody titers were observed in TED patients compared to controls, particularly in acute active TED.
