    Background:

    • Aging is associated with declines in cognitive functions, including reaction time (RT).
    • Previous theories suggested age-related RT slowing is due to less precise response control.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the underlying mechanisms of age-related slowing in choice reaction time (RT).
    • To test Rabbitt's (1979, 1981) hypothesis regarding response control in older adults.
    • To examine RT performance in a serial, four-choice RT task.

    • Participants completed a serial, four-choice reaction time task.
    • Reaction times (RTs) for both correct responses and errors were recorded.
