Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if the presence of children influences residential well water testing behaviors.
  • To determine if parental demographics affect well water testing frequency.
  • To assess parental concern regarding water safety and arsenic contamination.

Main Methods:

  • Emailed questionnaires were distributed to 8994 U.S. Midwest residential well water users in 2023.
  • Survey data analyzed the impact of children in the home on testing frequency.
  • Parental demographics were examined for their influence on testing behaviors.

Main Results:

  • Respondents with children did not report higher well water testing frequency than those without.
  • Increased testing frequency was associated with having more children, younger age, and residing in Wisconsin.
  • Parental gender, race, and ethnicity did not correlate with testing behaviors.
  • 70% of respondents were unconcerned about water safety, and 85% about arsenic specifically.

Conclusions:

  • The presence of children in the home does not appear to increase residential well water testing frequency.
  • Parental concern about arsenic toxicity, especially for children, does not significantly influence testing behaviors.
  • Further research is needed to understand barriers to well water testing and promote public health.
