Sex Linked Disorders01:43

Sex Linked Disorders

Like autosomes, sex chromosomes contain a variety of genes necessary for normal body function. When a mutation in one of these genes results in biological deficits, the disorder is considered sex-linked.
Factors Affecting Illness01:18

Factors Affecting Illness

When a person's physical, emotional, intellectual, social development or spiritual functioning is compromised, this deviation from a healthy normal state is called illness. Illness creates stress that in turn harms individuals. Irritation, anger, denial, hopelessness, and fear are behavioral and emotional changes an individual experiences in the phases of illness. A variety of factors influence a person's health and well-being.
For instance, risk factors are connected to illness, disability,...
Diseases of the Liver and Gallbladder01:26

Diseases of the Liver and Gallbladder

Liver and gallbladder diseases are a significant health concern, with prominent conditions including cirrhosis, hepatitis, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and gallstones. Jaundice is a common manifestation of liver and biliary disease.
Cirrhosis is characterized by the scarring of hepatic lobules in the liver, which are replaced by fibrous tissue, affecting the liver's normal functioning. NAFLD, on the other hand, is caused by an excessive build-up of fat in the liver, not related to...
Pulmonary Tuberculosis III01:31

Pulmonary Tuberculosis III

Tuberculosis (TB) is a contagious infection primarily affecting the lung parenchyma but which can also affect other body parts. TB can be classified based on disease development, presentation, and the affected anatomical site.
The first classification is based on the development of the disease, and it includes the following categories:
Mitral Stenosis I: Introduction01:22

Mitral Stenosis I: Introduction

Mitral Valve Stenosis (MVS) is a heart condition where the mitral valve narrows, impeding blood circulation from the left atrium to the left ventricle. The etiology and pathophysiology of this condition are multifaceted, leading to a cascade of cardiovascular complications.Causes of Mitral Valve StenosisRheumatic Heart Disease: It is the main cause of mitral valve stenosis, particularly in developing nations. This condition arises from rheumatic fever, an inflammatory illness resulting from...
Huntington Disease l: Introduction01:21

Huntington Disease l: Introduction

Huntington disease or HD is a progressive, fatal neurodegenerative disorder inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern.PathophysiologyIt is caused by expansion of the CAG trinucleotide repeat in the HTT gene on chromosome 4 (4p16.3), producing an abnormal huntingtin protein with an expanded polyglutamine tract. This misfolded protein disrupts cellular function, leading to neuronal death. Normal alleles have ≤26 repeats, 27–35 are intermediate (risk of expansion), 36–39 show reduced penetrance,...

Summary

This case report highlights successful conservative treatment for Müller-Weiss disease (osteonecrosis of the navicular bone). A multimodal approach significantly reduced midfoot pain, improving daily activities.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedics
  • Podiatry
  • Radiology

Background:

  • Müller-Weiss disease is a rare condition causing osteonecrosis of the lateral navicular bone.
  • It typically presents with dorsal midfoot pain, significantly impacting daily activities.
  • Surgical intervention is the predominant treatment discussed in existing literature.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report a case of successful conservative management for bilateral Müller-Weiss disease.
  • To evaluate the efficacy of a multimodal conservative treatment plan.
  • To present findings in a patient with multiple comorbidities.

Main Methods:

  • Conservative treatment included pain medication, custom ethylene vinyl acetate orthotics, and motion control shoes.
  • Physiotherapy focused on strengthening intrinsic foot muscles.

  • Weight management strategies were also implemented.
  • Main Results:

    • The patient experienced a significant reduction in bilateral midfoot pain, decreasing from a 9/10 to 2/10 severity.
    • Improvements were noted after 10 months of consistent conservative treatment.
    • The patient's daily activities were less limited by pain.

    Conclusions:

    • Conservative treatment can be effective for bilateral Müller-Weiss disease, even in patients with comorbidities.
    • A multimodal approach combining medication, orthotics, footwear, physiotherapy, and weight management offers a viable alternative to surgery.
    • This case report is the first to document successful conservative management of bilateral Müller-Weiss disease with this comprehensive strategy.
