Development of the Lymphatic System

The development of lymphatic tissues and vessels in embryonic life begins around the fifth week. These structures originate from the mesoderm layer, with lymph sacs emerging from developing veins.

Background:

Chylothorax, characterized by pleural effusion, can be challenging to diagnose and manage in felines.
Mesenteric lymphatic malformations are rare congenital anomalies affecting the lymphatic system.

Observation:

An 8-year-old Russian Blue cat presented with acute dyspnea and was diagnosed with chylothorax.
A contrast-enhanced CT scan revealed an incidental large peritoneal mass, suggestive of lymphatic origin.
The cat was euthanized due to recurrent chylothorax.

Findings:

Necropsy confirmed mesenteric lymphatic malformation with chylous fluid accumulation.
Histopathology supported the diagnosis of lymphatic malformation in the affected mesentery.

Implications:

This is the first reported case of mesenteric lymphatic malformation in a feline patient.
The study highlights the importance of advanced imaging in identifying rare causes of chylothorax in veterinary medicine.
