Hormonal receptors in vulvar tissues.

    Summary

    Hormonal receptor levels, including progesterone receptors, were studied in vulvar lesions. Elevated progesterone receptor levels in dystrophies suggest hormonal involvement, but receptors were not predictive markers for vulvar cancer.

    Background:

    • Seeking predictive markers for therapeutic and prognostic guidance in vulvar conditions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To analyze androgen, estrogen, and progesterone receptor levels in vulvar dystrophies and carcinomas.
    • To determine if hormonal receptor status can serve as a predictive or prognostic marker.
    • To explore the potential involvement of hormonal factors in the pathogenesis of vulvar lesions.

    Main Methods:

    • Hormonal receptor assays (androgen, estrogen, progesterone) using the Dextran-Charcoal technique.
    • Histological examination of vulvar lesions.
    • Study included 41 patients with vulvar dystrophy (20 atrophic, 21 hypertrophic) and 24 with vulvar carcinoma.

    Main Results:

    • Hormonal receptors were not found to be predictive or prognostic markers for neoplastic vulvar lesions.

    • Results align with previous observations of beneficial effects from topical steroid therapy in such conditions.
