Exercise Stress Test01:26

Exercise Stress Test

126
Introduction
Exercise stress testing, commonly known as a treadmill test, is a noninvasive procedure used to evaluate cardiovascular function and diagnose heart conditions.
Definition
An exercise stress test measures the heart's response to exertion using a treadmill or stationary bicycle. Chest electrodes record the heart's electrical activity through an ECG, and blood pressure is monitored regularly.

Exercise and Muscle Performance01:27

Exercise and Muscle Performance

1.2K
Exercise induces a range of adaptations in muscle tissue, depending on the type and duration of activity. Such physical training can be broadly categorized into two types: endurance exercises and resistance exercises.
Endurance exercises
Endurance exercises involve running, swimming, or cycling, which require repetitive movements with low force output. When a person engages in endurance exercise, a few noticeable changes occur in their skeletal muscles. For instance, the number of capillaries...

Stress Prevention and Stress Management Techniques IV

13
Stress often leads to unhealthy habits like smoking, excessive drinking, and overeating, which offer short-term relief but ultimately increase long-term health risks. These behaviors create a cycle that temporarily lowers stress levels but can result in severe long-term health consequences. Breaking these habits is essential to reduce the risk of chronic diseases and improve overall well-being. Three primary changes that support better health include quitting smoking, reducing alcohol intake,...

Peripherally and Centrally Acting Muscle Relaxants: A Comparison01:09

Peripherally and Centrally Acting Muscle Relaxants: A Comparison

3.0K
Skeletal muscle relaxants can target the central nervous system [CNS] to reduce muscle tension or act directly at the neuromuscular junction to induce temporary paralysis. These two classes of muscle relaxants are called centrally acting muscle relaxants and peripherally acting muscle relaxants. They differ in their action, mechanism, administration route, and clinical uses.
Centrally acting muscle relaxants can be further divided into spasmolytic and antispasmodic drugs. Spasmolytic...

Introduction to Stress and Lifestyle01:27

Introduction to Stress and Lifestyle

43
Stress is a multifaceted response to events perceived as challenging or threatening, highlighting physical, emotional, cognitive, and behavioral reactions. Physically, stress can lead to fatigue, sleep disruptions, and various health issues such as frequent colds, chest pains, and nausea. Emotionally, it can manifest as anxiety, depression, irritability, and anger triggered by both minor and major life events. Cognitively, it may result in difficulty in concentration, memory, and...

Quantifying Work02:30

Quantifying Work

18.9K
As a system undergoes a change, its internal energy can change, and energy can be transferred from the system to the surroundings, or from the surroundings to the system.

    Area of Science:

    • Occupational Health
    • Digital Health
    • Mind-Body Interventions

    Background:

    • Workplace yoga offers significant benefits for the physical and mental well-being of white-collar employees.
    • Digital platforms enable flexible yoga practice delivery in professional settings.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the efficacy of synchronous (live, via video conference) versus asynchronous (pre-recorded videos) yoga interventions.
    • To assess the impact on stress, fatigue, sleep quality, work efficiency, musculoskeletal issues, and overall quality of life.

    Main Methods:

    • A randomized controlled trial involving 22 white-collar workers.
    • Participants were assigned to either a synchronous or asynchronous 8-week yoga program (3 sessions/week, 40-45 min/session).
    • Standardized questionnaires measured perceived stress, fatigue, sleep quality, productivity, musculoskeletal symptoms, and quality of life.

    Main Results:

    • Both yoga groups showed significant improvements in fatigue (Fatigue Severity Scale) and quality of life (SF-36: physical function, mental health, general health).
    • The synchronous group demonstrated greater improvements in stress (Perceived Stress Scale) and pain (SF-36), with higher increases in energy (SF-36).
    • The asynchronous group reported improvements in physical role difficulty and social functioning (SF-36).

    Conclusions:

    • Both synchronous and asynchronous workplace yoga are effective in enhancing the quality of life for white-collar workers.
    • Synchronous yoga demonstrates a superior ability to alleviate fatigue and pain, making it a recommended intervention for these specific issues.
