Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Epidemiology
- Infectious Diseases
Background:
- Long COVID, characterized by persistent symptoms beyond 12 weeks post-infection, poses a significant public health challenge.
- Existing research on long COVID prevalence and risk factors among Chinese populations has not included Chinese residents in Canada.
- This study addresses a critical gap by examining the long COVID experience within this specific demographic during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine the prevalence of long COVID among Chinese individuals residing in Canada.
- To identify sociodemographic, health, COVID-19, and vaccine-related factors associated with experiencing long COVID.
- To delineate the common symptoms and duration of long COVID in this population.
Main Methods:
Main Results:
- Out of 491 participants, 63 (12.83%) reported experiencing long COVID, with a mean duration of 5.31 months.
- Key symptoms included difficulty concentrating (21.67%), pain/discomfort (15.00%), and anxiety/depression (8.33%).
- Significant risk factors for long COVID were multiple COVID-19 infections (OR=23.7), severe initial symptoms (OR=3.18), and use of over-the-counter (OR=2.47) or traditional Chinese medicine (OR=8.26). Very good/good health status was protective (OR=0.25).
Conclusions:
- A substantial proportion of Canadian Chinese experienced prolonged long COVID symptoms during the pandemic.
- Preexisting health status and prevention of reinfection are crucial for managing long COVID.
- The study suggests a potential association between the use of over-the-counter or traditional Chinese medicine and the long COVID experience in this population.
