Modeling in Therapy01:26

Modeling in Therapy

Modeling, a key technique in therapy, uses observational learning to help clients acquire and practice new skills by watching therapists demonstrate desired behaviors. This approach, rooted in Albert Bandura's concept of vicarious learning, plays a significant role in therapeutic interventions for various psychological conditions, including social anxiety, ADHD, and depression.
Participant Modeling
Participant modeling involves therapists demonstrating calm and effective behaviors in situations...

Area of Science:

  • Radiation Oncology
  • Medical Education

Background:

  • Head and neck cancer (HNC) brachytherapy (BT) requires specialized training.
  • A need exists for effective teaching methods in HNC brachytherapy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of didactic lectures and hands-on cadaveric training for head and neck brachytherapy.
  • To assess the effectiveness of a teaching course for radiation oncologists and medical physicists.

Main Methods:

  • A teaching course combining didactic lectures and hands-on cadaveric workshops was conducted.
  • Pre-course surveys and post-course evaluations were used to assess participant learning and confidence.

Main Results:

  • 33 radiation oncologists and 7 medical physicists were trained.
  • 96% of participants found hands-on cadaveric training for buccal mucosa cancer very useful.
  • 94% of participants felt the course met their expectations, with significant increases in confidence for performing BT.

Conclusions:

  • Didactic training coupled with hands-on cadaveric procedures enhances confidence in head and neck brachytherapy.
  • This combined approach is a suitable method for training radiation oncologists in HNC brachytherapy.
