  • Attentional strategies may modulate pain perception and affective responses during physical activity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the impact of a dissociative attentional strategy on performance and perception during static stretching.
  • To determine if a secondary cognitive task (mental math) influences range of motion (ROM) and perceived stretch intensity.

Main Methods:

  • Participants (n=16) performed active and passive static stretching under conditions with and without a mental math task.
  • A block-randomized Latin Square design was used to control for order effects.
  • Multivariate Analysis of Variance (MANOVA) analyzed range of motion, perceived stretch intensity, and pleasantness.

Main Results:

  • Passive stretching yielded greater ROM, reduced perceived intensity, and increased pleasantness compared to active stretching.
  • The mental math task did not significantly alter ROM but reduced perceived stretch intensity and increased pleasantness.
  • A significant effect of cognitive load was found on perceived stretch intensity and pleasantness.

Conclusions:

  • Dissociation through a cognitive task can decrease perceived stretch intensity without compromising ROM.
  • This strategy is effective during both active and passive stretching, potentially improving the overall stretching experience and active ROM.
