Development and validation of voltammetric method for determination of theobromine

Abstract:
The dimethylxanthine alkaloid of theobromine (THB) is naturally found in various plants and their byproducts. Derivatives of methylxanthine can potentially induce harmful impacts on human health if ingested in excessive quantities or by individuals who are particularly susceptible to their effects. Thus, in the present study, we have prepared the electrode by drop casting using cerium oxide/copper oxide nanocomposite on the glassy carbon electrode surface (CeO2/CuO/GCE), for the detection of THB. The electrochemical sensing performance of THB was done by using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and square wave voltammetry techniques (SWV). The CeO2/CuO/GCE sensor has demonstrated an wide linear range from 3.6-756.68 ng/L, and low limit of detection (LOD) of 4.95 ng/L. Additionally, the constructed sensor was effectively used to detect THB in food samples with achieving satisfactory recoverie values of 97.13-99.97 %.
