Summary

Assisted reproductive technologies (ART) conceived individuals show no significant differences in 24-hour blood pressure compared to spontaneously conceived peers. This study suggests ART offspring do not have an unfavorable cardiovascular profile in youth.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the vascular function of young individuals conceived via ART.
  • To compare 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure (24 h ABPM) in ART subjects and controls.
  • To determine if ART conception is associated with altered blood pressure profiles.

Main Methods:

  • 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (24 h ABPM) was performed on ART subjects and matched controls.
  • Pulse wave analysis was conducted to assess vascular function.
  • Blood pressure, central blood pressure, nocturnal blood pressure decline, and pulse wave velocity (PWV) were analyzed.

Main Results:

  • No significant differences were observed in 24-hour systolic/diastolic blood pressure (SBP/DBP) between ART (n=41) and control (n=46) groups.
  • Central blood pressure, nocturnal blood pressure decrease, and 24-hour PWV also showed no significant variations.
  • Mean age of participants was comparable between groups (15.37 ± 5.46 years vs. 16.48 ± 5.23 years).

Conclusions:

  • This study found no significant differences in 24-hour blood pressure parameters between ART conceived individuals and spontaneously conceived peers.
  • The findings do not support an increased risk of unfavorable blood pressure profiles in ART offspring during youth.
  • Larger, multi-center studies are recommended to confirm these results and their long-term implications.
