Background:

Childhood firesetting is a concerning behavior with complex underlying factors.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the relationship between childhood firesetting and diagnoses within the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Third Edition (DSM-III).
To examine how firesetting interacts with specific diagnoses, particularly conduct disorder, in a clinical child psychiatric population.

Main Methods:

A representative sample of 204 child psychiatric outpatients was assessed.
Data were collected on firesetting behaviors and DSM-III diagnoses.
Statistical analyses were employed to determine the relationship and interaction effects.

Main Results:

A strong association was found between childhood firesetting and the DSM-III diagnosis of conduct disorder.
A significant interaction effect was observed, indicating that firesetting is related to both reduced competence in activities and increased externalizing (undercontrolled) behaviors.

Conclusions:

Childhood firesetting is significantly associated with conduct disorder in child psychiatric outpatients.
The findings underscore the importance of assessing firesetting behavior in children diagnosed with conduct disorder.
Interventions should address both the firesetting behavior and the associated deficits in competence and impulse control.
