Spontaneous Healing of a Scaphoid Nonunion Following an Ipsilateral Distal Radius Fracture: A Case Report

Case:
A 55-year-old professional flutist developed a scaphoid waist nonunion that did not receive initial treatment. Six months later, she sustained an ipsilateral distal radius fracture for which cast immobilization was applied as conservative treatment. This approach facilitated healing of the distal radius fracture and serendipitously led to spontaneous healing of the scaphoid nonunion.
Conclusion:
This case illustrates an unusual healing response in a scaphoid nonunion, which typically requires surgical intervention. The spontaneous healing observed in this case following conservative treatment highlights the potential for nonsurgical approaches in managing similar cases.
