    Summary

    Investigating choline acetyltransferase in rats, this study found no changes after trigeminal sensory ganglia lesions. This suggests sensory neurons in the trigeminal system are not a major source of cholinergic activity.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the role of cholinergic neurons in the trigeminal sensory system.
    • To determine if choline acetyltransferase activity is altered following trigeminal nerve damage.

    Main Methods:

    • Choline acetyltransferase activity was measured.
    • Lesions were made in the rat Gasserian ganglia (trigeminal sensory ganglia).
    • Enzyme activity was assessed in the superior cervical ganglia and medulla oblongata.

    Main Results:

    • Electrolytic lesions of the Gasserian ganglia did not alter choline acetyltransferase activity.
