Variability and Need for Uniformity in Paediatric Care Guidelines in Belgium: A National Survey

To determine the current variability in the use of clinical care guidelines across hospitals and evaluate the potential for uniform guidelines throughout Belgium.

A survey, consisting of 48 questions covering demographics, use of evidence-based medicine, and opinions on guideline standardisation, was conducted among paediatric trainees and paediatricians. Statistical analysis included paired t-tests (significance p < 0.05) and thematic analysis to explore variations in guideline use across hospitals, departments, and doctors.

A total of 124 participants responded, with an even distribution in years of training. Sixty-three percent were currently working at a university hospital. Common sources for guideline implementation included UpToDate (80%) and local guidelines (58%). The largest differences reported were in the choice of treatment options. Trainees generally consider university hospitals to have a higher number and more up-to-date guidelines. Experience-based medicine is more commonly practised than evidence-based medicine. Ninety percent of participants were convinced that uniform guidelines would enhance patient care, improve the quality of training, and promote evidence-based treatment.

This national study indicates significant differences between hospitals, departments and practitioners in guidelines used. The majority of the participants support the adaptation of universal guidelines to improve both patient care and education.
