Background:

  • Health profession educators often lack structured guidance for designing and evaluating research.
  • Traditional lectures are insufficient for developing advanced research skills in educators.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To design and implement an interactive workshop, the Sailboat activity, to improve educators' research project design and evaluation skills.
  • To offer a learner-focused, reflective environment for educators to refine their research plans.

Main Methods:

  • Participants used a Sailboat diagram to represent their research plans and completed pre- and post-workshop surveys on confidence.
  • A 90-minute virtual workshop involved paired discussions, development of Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound (SMART) action plans, and group reflection.
  • Thirty-four educators from 17 specialties participated across three years.

Main Results:

  • High survey response rates (>90%) were observed.
  • Participants reported the workshop was valuable for refining project plans, organizing thoughts, and fostering peer interaction.
  • Significant increases in confidence were noted in areas such as identifying project barriers, weaknesses, key elements, alignment, and next steps (p < .05).

Conclusions:

  • The Sailboat activity is an effective and feasible method for educators to critically appraise and refine Health Professions Education Research projects.
  • The workshop can be successfully implemented in virtual environments and adapted for other academic settings.
