Clinical Evaluation of the Peri-implant Mucosal Response to Different Attachment Systems in Implant-Retained
Abstract:
This in vivo study evaluated the peri-implant mucosal response to different attachment systems in implant-retained overdentures through clinical examinations. All participants in this study were completely edentulous patients who had received novel complete maxillary and mandibular den-tures. Each patient received two dental implants in the canine area of the mandible. The patients were divided randomly into two equal groups depending on how the mandibular overdentures were retained to the implants: with Novaloc attachments or with Locator attachments. The peri-implant mucosal response was clinically evaluated in terms of probing depth (PD), Plaque Index (PI), and bleeding on probing (BOP) at 0, 4, 8, and 12 months after implant loading. Statistical comparison of the two groups showed that the Locator group consistently experienced an increase in PD. There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups in BOP and PI over time, although the Locator group had higher mean values. Based on the findings of this study, Novaloc attach-ments may have a superior impact on peri-implant soft tissue conditions and mucositis compared to Locator attachments after 1 year of follow-up, potentially leading to improved long-term implant success.
