A late complication of vasectomy can cause unremitting epididymal pain years after the procedure. Surgical intervention, such as epididymectomy, effectively relieves these debilitating symptoms.

    Area of Science:

    • Urology
    • Surgical Pathology

    Background:

    • Vasectomy is a common form of male contraception.
    • Potential long-term complications require further investigation.

    Observation:

    • A syndrome of unremitting epididymal pain and induration emerged 5-7 years post-vasectomy in 18 patients.
    • Symptoms were refractory to conservative treatments, including antibiotics.

    Findings:

    • Twenty surgical specimens from these patients were analyzed.
    • Pathology revealed sequelae consistent with chronic obstruction.

    Implications:

    • This late post-vasectomy syndrome is a significant complication.
    • Increased recognition is anticipated as vasectomized populations age.
