    Summary

    Posterior urethral valves in boys can cause bladder dysfunction. Clean intermittent self-catheterization effectively manages symptoms, improving renal function and urinary continence.

    Background:

    • Posterior urethral valves (PUV) are a common congenital anomaly in male infants.
    • PUV can lead to bladder dysfunction, including poor compliance and urinary retention.
    • Upper urinary tract damage is a significant concern in untreated PUV.

    Observation:

    • Four boys diagnosed with posterior urethral valves presented with dysfunctional bladders.
    • These patients exhibited poor bladder compliance and significant residual urine.
    • Associated renal impairment and upper tract changes were noted.

    Findings:

    • All four patients were successfully managed with clean intermittent self-catheterization (CISC).
    • CISC led to stabilization or improvement in renal function.
    • Upper tract drainage and urinary continence showed marked improvement following CISC.

    Implications:

    • CISC is a viable and effective long-term management strategy for bladder dysfunction secondary to PUV.
    • Early intervention with CISC can prevent or reverse renal damage.
    • This approach significantly enhances quality of life by improving continence.
