Changes in cerebral cortex activity after application of kinesiotape: Systematic review

Introduction:
Kinesiotape (KT), is a resource that has become a trend in the treatment of pain, strength, functionality, and other outcomes related to musculoskeletal and joint injuries. Researchers have sought to understand what relationships exist between the cerebral cortex and the use of non-familiar therapies such as KT.
Objective:
To analyze studies that, after the application of KT, used neuroimaging exams to observe changes in cerebral cortex activity.
Methodology:
Search in 9 databases (Medline, Pubmed, Cochrane, Web Of Science, Lilacs, PEDro, Ebsco, Scopus, Cinahl and Sport Discus) between April and May 2022.
Inclusion Criteria:
studies that used neuroimaging resources as a means of evaluating the results of elastic bandage intervention.
Results:
three studies met the inclusion criteria, each used KT in different regions of the human body, as well as varying in how it was applied, with or without tension.
Discussion:
The studies are still very scarce regarding the study of the effects of KT in the cerebral cortex, however it is clear in the literature that regions of the cortex register alterations in the electrical activity due to factors such as pain, and that KT as a resource that decreased this symptom, can have positive reflexes in the neurophysiological response of the individual.
Conclusion:
The studies analyzed identified that there was a reduction in cortical activity after the use of KT, in regions with hyperactivity of the same, mainly in aspects of pain, which suggests that the intervention with this method brings benefits to patients, including neurophysiological benefits.
