    Area of Science:

    • Addiction research
    • Behavioral science
    • Criminology

    Background:

    • Previous studies on alcohol and aggression often focused on incarcerated populations.
    • Limited data exists on alcohol use patterns and explanatory variables in community samples.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the link between alcohol consumption patterns and aggressive behavior in a blue-collar male workforce.
    • To differentiate the effects of general alcohol use versus pathological consumption on aggression.

    Main Methods:

    • Surveyed 484 blue-collar men on alcohol use, aggressive behaviors (fights, marital conflict), and related factors.
    • Analyzed relationships controlling for sociodemographic variables, hostility, and marital satisfaction.

    Main Results:

    • Current alcohol consumption levels did not correlate with the number of fights or physical marital conflict.
    • A pathological pattern of alcohol consumption and recent diagnoses of alcohol misuse/dependence were significantly linked to physical marital conflict.
    • These associations persisted even after controlling for confounding variables.

    Conclusions:

    • Pathological alcohol use, rather than general consumption, is a significant predictor of physical marital conflict in this population.
    • Findings support previous research linking alcohol-related issues to aggressive behavior and criminal violence.
