PARS PLANA VITRECTOMY FOR RETINAL DETACHMENT REPAIR AS A LATE COMPLICATION FOR PREVIOUS ABUSIVE HEAD TRAUMA

The purpose of this study was to document the possibility of late retinal detachment after abusive head trauma (also known as shaken baby syndrome). Abusive head trauma has been associated with different retinal findings, very rarely with retinal detachment.

One patient with previous abusive head trauma and current late retinal detachment underwent complete ocular examination, fundus photography with the Optos introduced ultra-widefield retinal imaging before and after pars plana vitrectomy for retinal detachment repair.

The patient underwent a successful pars plana vitrectomy, posterior hyaloid peeling, endolaser, and silicone oil injection.

Retinal detachment may occur as late complication of abusive head trauma.
