Operant Conditioning Intervention01:24

Operant Conditioning Intervention

24
Operant conditioning serves as a foundational principle in therapeutic interventions aimed at modifying maladaptive behaviors. Central to this approach is the notion that behaviors, both adaptive and maladaptive, are learned through reinforcement. By analyzing the environmental factors that reinforce problematic behaviors, clinicians can design interventions to weaken these reinforcements and replace maladaptive behaviors with healthier alternatives.
In operant conditioning, behaviors that are...

Hallucinogens and Psychedelics01:27

Hallucinogens and Psychedelics

145
Hallucinogens are psychoactive substances that profoundly alter perceptual experiences, generating unreal visual and sensory images. Often referred to as psychedelic drugs — a term derived from the Greek words "psyche" (mind) and "delos" (revealing) — these substances include marijuana and lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), among others. These drugs vary in intensity and effects.
Marijuana, derived from the dried leaves and flowers of the hemp plant, contains...

Group Therapy01:26

Group Therapy

14
Group therapy is a sociocultural approach to psychological treatment, where individuals with shared psychological challenges come together under the guidance of a mental health professional. This therapeutic modality offers unique opportunities for individuals to connect, share, and grow within the context of a supportive group. By fostering mutual understanding and collaboration, group therapy can address a range of psychological concerns effectively, often complementing or surpassing the...

Altered States of Awareness01:06

Altered States of Awareness

116
Altered states of consciousness represent significant deviations from one's normal mental state. These deviations can range from subtle changes in awareness to profound transformations in perception, thought processes, and sensory experiences. Altered states of consciousness can be triggered by various factors, including drug use, meditation, hypnosis, illness, or even intense fatigue.
The ingestion of substances like stimulants or hallucinogens leads to chemical alterations in the brain...

Interpersonal Psychotherapy01:25

Interpersonal Psychotherapy

11
Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) is a structured, time-limited therapeutic approach initially developed to treat depression. It integrates key concepts from psychodynamic, humanistic, and cognitive-behavioral therapies, making it a uniquely eclectic framework. The therapy is rooted in the interpersonal theories of Adolph Meyer and Harry Stack Sullivan, as well as John Bowlby's attachment theory, and focuses on the interplay between interpersonal relationships and emotional well-being.

Behavior Therapy01:22

Behavior Therapy

34
Behavior therapy incorporates diverse techniques rooted in classical conditioning principles to address maladaptive behaviors and anxiety disorders. These methods aim to reduce avoidance behaviors, foster adaptive coping mechanisms, and alter associations between stimuli and responses, making them effective in a wide range of therapeutic contexts.
Exposure therapy is a cornerstone of behavioral treatment for anxiety disorders. It involves systematic exposure to feared stimuli, either in real...

Summary

Psilocybin-assisted therapy may increase conservation values in alcohol use disorder patients. However, these value changes did not impact drinking outcomes in the study.

Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Psychology
  • Neuroscience

Background:

  • Psilocybin-assisted therapy (PAT) is under investigation for psychiatric conditions.
  • Effects of PAT on personal values in alcohol use disorder (AUD) patients are unknown.
  • This study explores PAT's impact on personal values and drinking outcomes in AUD.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of psilocybin-assisted therapy on personal values in patients with alcohol use disorder.
  • To assess the relationship between changes in personal values, acute psychedelic experiences, and drinking outcomes.

Main Methods:

  • A phase II clinical trial involved 93 AUD participants receiving psychotherapy and psilocybin or placebo.
  • Personal values were measured using the Schwartz Value Survey (SVS) pre- and post-treatment.
  • Acute psychedelic experiences were assessed using the Mystical Experience Questionnaire (MEQ) and 5-Dimensional Altered States of Consciousness Scale (5D-ASC).

Main Results:

  • Psilocybin-assisted therapy significantly increased the Conservation value domain, specifically "security" and "tradition."
  • No significant changes were observed in other value domains or in the placebo group.
  • Ineffability and Dread of Ego Dissolution during psychedelic experiences correlated with increased Conservation values.

Conclusions:

  • Psilocybin-assisted therapy may alter the value structure of AUD patients by enhancing Conservation values.
  • While acute psychedelic effects are associated with these value changes, they do not predict drinking outcomes.
