Summary

This study enrolled nearly 1000 patients with type 2 diabetes to understand nonadherence to annual screenings for diabetic retinopathy, nephropathy, and foot complications. Baseline data on predictors of nonadherence were collected for future analysis.

Background:

  • Yearly screening for diabetic retinopathy (DR), diabetic nephropathy (DN), and diabetic foot complications (DFC) is recommended for diabetes mellitus (DM) patients.
  • Poor adherence to these screenings is common, but data on its magnitude and predictors in Singapore are lacking.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the rates, predictors, and impact of nonadherence to DR, DN, and DFC screening in type 2 diabetes patients in Singapore.
  • To describe methodology and baseline characteristics associated with nonadherence.

Main Methods:

  • Prospective, mixed-methods study involving 974 patients from 6 primary care centers in Singapore.
  • Nonadherence defined as missing annual rescreening appointments within 4 months.
  • Baseline sociodemographic, medical, and patient-reported data collected; qualitative interviews planned.

  • Nearly 1000 patients with type 2 diabetes were enrolled, with systematic collection of potential nonadherence predictors.
  • Follow-up will establish nonadherence rates and modifiable predictors to inform program initiatives.
