Background:

Depression symptoms often present differently based on gender.
Current screening tools lack gender sensitivity, potentially missing depression in men.
There's a need for validated instruments to address gender-specific depression presentation.

Purpose of the Study:

To validate the German version of the Gender Inclusive Depression Scale (GIDS).
To examine the factor structure and psychometric properties of the GIDS.
To assess the influence of sex and age on depression screening using the GIDS.

Main Methods:

Exploratory factor analysis on a large online sample (N=1173).
Confirmatory factor analysis on a separate sample (N=418) to replicate findings.
Calculation of psychometric properties and assessment of sex/age effects.

Main Results:

A 5-factor solution for the GIDS was confirmed.
A 15-item screening version (GIDS-15) was developed.
Satisfactory psychometric properties were found, with noted critical values for aggressiveness and substance use subscales.

Conclusions:

The GIDS-15 is a robust multidimensional depression screening tool.
Complementary gender assessment tools are recommended for comprehensive screening.
Further validation and research into non-binary gender identities are needed before primary care implementation.
