The Problem-Oriented Medical Record (POMR) revolutionized medical record-keeping by introducing a systematic approach focusing on the patient's problems rather than merely listing symptoms. Dr. Lawrence Weed's introduction of this method in the 1960s marked a significant advancement in medical documentation. The POMR framework consists of four key components: the database, problem list, plan of care, and progress notes.

What do you think is the single most influential factor in determining with whom you become friends and whom you form romantic relationships? You might be surprised to learn that the answer is simple: the people with whom you have the most contact. This most important factor is proximity. You are more likely to be friends with people you have regular contact with. For example, there are decades of research that shows that you are more likely to become friends with people who live in your dorm,...

Area of Science:

  • Medical research
  • Physician well-being
  • Occupational health

Background:

  • Few studies examine external factors like spousal support on physician work-life integration (WLI) satisfaction and burnout.
  • Understanding these associations can inform strategies to combat physician burnout and enhance WLI satisfaction.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare spousal support levels between male and female physicians.
  • To investigate the relationship between spousal support and WLI satisfaction and burnout.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional survey was administered to 661 faculty physicians at an academic medical center.
  • Data on spousal support, WLI satisfaction, and burnout were collected and analyzed using logistic regression, adjusting for demographic and work-related factors.

Main Results:

  • Physicians with high spousal career support reported higher WLI satisfaction (OR, 1.50) and lower burnout (OR, 0.73), independent of gender.
  • Male physicians showed higher WLI satisfaction than female physicians (OR, 1.95), but burnout rates did not significantly differ by gender.

Conclusions:

  • Spousal support is a significant factor associated with WLI satisfaction and burnout among physicians, irrespective of gender.
  • Future research should explore interventions to enhance spousal support for improved physician well-being.
