Physician burnout and work-life integration (WLI) satisfaction are linked to spousal support. Higher spousal support correlates with better WLI satisfaction and reduced burnout, regardless of gender.
Area of Science:
- Medical research
- Physician well-being
- Occupational health
Background:
- Few studies examine external factors like spousal support on physician work-life integration (WLI) satisfaction and burnout.
- Understanding these associations can inform strategies to combat physician burnout and enhance WLI satisfaction.
Purpose of the Study:
- To compare spousal support levels between male and female physicians.
- To investigate the relationship between spousal support and WLI satisfaction and burnout.
Main Methods:
- A cross-sectional survey was administered to 661 faculty physicians at an academic medical center.
- Data on spousal support, WLI satisfaction, and burnout were collected and analyzed using logistic regression, adjusting for demographic and work-related factors.
Main Results:
- Physicians with high spousal career support reported higher WLI satisfaction (OR, 1.50) and lower burnout (OR, 0.73), independent of gender.
- Male physicians showed higher WLI satisfaction than female physicians (OR, 1.95), but burnout rates did not significantly differ by gender.
Conclusions:
- Spousal support is a significant factor associated with WLI satisfaction and burnout among physicians, irrespective of gender.
- Future research should explore interventions to enhance spousal support for improved physician well-being.
