    Summary

Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) treatment significantly reduced postischemic edema in a rat model. This finding suggests HBO therapy may aid in managing acute ischemic conditions when other treatments are insufficient.

    Area of Science:

    • Biomedical Engineering
    • Physiology
    • Oxygen Therapy

    Background:

    • Posttraumatic circulatory insufficiency is a clinical challenge.
    • Hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) has shown promise in treating extremity ischemia.
    • The efficacy of HBO in reducing postischemic edema requires further investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effect of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) on postischemic edema.
    • To evaluate HBO as an adjuvant therapy for acute ischemic conditions.

    Main Methods:

    • A tourniquet model was used to induce temporary ischemia in rat hindlimbs for 3 hours.
    • Postischemic edema was measured in the ischemic limb compared to the contralateral control limb.
    • One group received HBO treatment at 2.5 atmospheres absolute (ATA) for 45 minutes post-reperfusion.

    Related Experiment Videos

    Main Results:

    • A significant (p < 0.001) postischemic edema was observed up to 48 hours after reperfusion.
    • HBO treatment significantly reduced (p < 0.001) postischemic edema.
    • The edema reduction persisted for 40 hours after the last HBO treatment session.

    Conclusions:

    • Hyperbaric oxygen effectively reduces postischemic edema in a rat model.
    • HBO may serve as a valuable adjuvant therapy for acute ischemic conditions.
    • HBO can be beneficial when surgical repair alone is insufficient to resolve ischemia.
