Insights
Disparities in childhood growth evaluation disproportionately affect females and minority children. Addressing healthcare access, provider bias, and structural racism is essential for equitable growth assessment and treatment.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric endocrinology
- Health equity research
- Child growth and development
Background:
- Significant gender, racial, and socioeconomic disparities are documented in the evaluation and treatment of childhood growth.
- White males are often overevaluated and overtreated, while females and children from minoritized racial and ethnic groups are frequently underevaluated and undertreated.
- These disparities can lead to long-term health consequences and impact overall well-being.
Purpose of the Study:
- To highlight existing disparities in childhood growth assessment.
- To emphasize the need for a comprehensive strategy to mitigate these inequities.
- To advocate for improved healthcare access and provider awareness.
Main Methods:
- This study is a review and synthesis of existing literature on disparities in pediatric growth evaluation.
- Analysis of data concerning differential treatment patterns based on gender, race, and socioeconomic status.
- Identification of key factors contributing to these disparities.
Main Results:
- Evidence confirms that gender, race, and socioeconomic status significantly influence the evaluation and treatment of childhood growth.
- White males show a trend towards overevaluation and overtreatment.
- Females and children from minority groups are consistently underevaluated and undertreated, indicating systemic bias.
Conclusions:
- A multi-faceted approach is imperative to rectify disparities in childhood growth assessment.
- Key interventions include enhancing healthcare access, increasing provider education and awareness of biases, and actively addressing structural racism.
- Implementing these changes is crucial for achieving equitable care and optimal health outcomes for all children.
Abstract:
Gender, racial, and socioeconomic disparities exist in the evaluation of childhood growth, namely the overevaluation/treatment of White males and under evaluation/treatment of females and children from minoritized groups. To improve disparities in growth, a comprehensive approach is crucial to improve access to health care, increase provider education and awareness, and address biases and structural racism.
