Summary

Intrauterine devices (IUDs) can rarely migrate into the bladder, causing stone formation. Laser lithotripsy offers a minimally invasive treatment for this rare complication, resolving urinary symptoms.

Background:

  • Intrauterine devices (IUDs) are a widely used contraceptive method.
  • Extrauterine migration is a rare complication of IUDs.
  • Intravesical migration with stone formation is exceptional.

Observation:

  • A 39-year-old woman presented with lower urinary tract symptoms (dysuria, pollakiuria).
  • A bladder stone was found, associated with a migrated IUD inserted four years prior.
  • Symptoms began four years after IUD insertion.

Findings:

  • The migrated IUD led to significant bladder stone formation.
  • Laser lithotripsy successfully treated the bladder stone and facilitated IUD removal.
  • The patient experienced uncomplicated recovery and symptom resolution.

Implications:

  • IUD intravesical migration with stone formation is a rare but significant complication.
  • Diagnosis can be aided by ultrasonography and radiography.
  • Laser lithotripsy is an effective, minimally invasive treatment option.
  • Prompt treatment is crucial to prevent further complications.
