Diabetes Mellitus: Type 2 and Gestational01:22

Diabetes Mellitus: Type 2 and Gestational

2.1K
Type 2 diabetes, characterized by insulin resistance, arises when the insulin receptors on cells lose responsiveness to insulin, diminishing the cell's capacity to take up glucose, resulting in elevated blood glucose levels. To receive a diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes, a series of blood glucose tests are necessary to assess whether the blood glucose falls within normal parameters. If the result is out of the normal range, a patient may be diagnosed as prediabetic or diabetic, depending on the...

Surveys02:16

Surveys

14.7K
Often, psychologists develop surveys as a means of gathering data. Surveys are lists of questions to be answered by research participants, and can be delivered as paper-and-pencil questionnaires, administered electronically, or conducted verbally. Generally, the survey itself can be completed in a short time, and the ease of administering a survey makes it easy to collect data from a large number of people.

Diabetes: Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Complications

487
For most patients, experiencing several weeks of polyuria, polydipsia, fatigue, and significant weight loss may indicate the presence of diabetes. Furthermore, adults displaying the phenotypic appearance of type 2 diabetes (particularly those who are obese and not initially insulin-requiring), may have islet cell autoantibodies, suggesting autoimmune-mediated β cell destruction and a diagnosis of latent autoimmune diabetes of adults (LADA). The categorization of glucose homeostasis is...

Diabetes: Management and Pharmacotherapy

214
The therapy for diabetes aims to alleviate hyperglycemia-related symptoms, prevent acute metabolic decompensation, and reduce chronic end-organ complications. Glycemic control is evaluated through short-term (self-monitoring, continuous glucose monitoring) and long-term (A1c, fructosamine) metrics, enabling near real-time tracking of blood glucose levels and reflecting glycemic control over specific time frames.
Insulin remains the cornerstone of treatment for most patients with type 1 and many...

Obesity01:24

Obesity

347
The Body Mass Index (BMI) is a numerical value derived from a person's weight and height, used to categorize individuals into weight ranges. It is calculated using the formula: weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. Obesity is a health condition characterized by excessive accumulation of adipose tissue that poses health risks, often diagnosed with a BMI ≥ 30. This excess fat storage occurs when surplus dietary calories are converted into triglycerides and stored in...

Diabetes Mellitus: Overview and Type I Subtype

2.3K
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic metabolic disorder characterized by high blood glucose levels due to inadequate insulin production, insulin resistance, or both. The condition affects millions worldwide and can significantly impact their health and quality of life.
Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. As a result, the body is unable to produce sufficient insulin, and individuals with...

Summary

Many adults in the UAE have poor knowledge and practices regarding prediabetes, a reversible condition. A significant number are at high risk for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and unaware of prevention strategies.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Endocrinology
  • Diabetes Research

Background:

  • Prediabetes, a state of mild hyperglycemia, significantly elevates the risk of developing type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM).
  • Early identification and intervention are crucial for preventing T2DM progression.
  • Understanding population-level knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) is vital for targeted public health strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) related to prediabetes among adults in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
  • To evaluate prediabetes and undiagnosed T2DM risk levels using the Saudi Diabetes Risk Score (SADRISC).
  • To identify factors associated with prediabetes KAP and risk in the UAE population.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among 414 adults in the UAE between February and March 2022.
  • The Knowledge Attitude Practice - Prediabetes Assessment Questionnaire (KAP-PAQ) and the Saudi Diabetes Risk Score (SADRISC) were utilized.
  • Statistical analyses included Mann-Whitney U, Kruskal-Wallis tests, and Spearman correlation.

Main Results:

  • 65% of participants exhibited poor knowledge, and 84.1% demonstrated poor practices regarding prediabetes.
  • 27.8% of non-diabetic participants were classified as high-risk for prediabetes or undiagnosed T2DM.
  • 49% were unaware that prediabetes is preventable, and 58.9% had never checked their blood glucose levels.

Conclusions:

  • UAE adults demonstrate insufficient prediabetes knowledge and poor health practices, despite generally positive attitudes.
  • A substantial proportion of the population is at high risk for prediabetes or undiagnosed T2DM, highlighting a critical public health concern.
  • Targeted interventions, including awareness campaigns and screening programs, are essential for improving prediabetes management and early detection in the UAE.
