Background:

Healthcare organizations face unprecedented challenges including workforce shortages, pandemics, and economic pressures impacting care quality.
Organizational resilience, the ability to adapt to stressors, is crucial but less understood at the team and system levels compared to individual clinicians.
Defining and measuring organizational resilience is essential for effective response to current and future healthcare crises.

Purpose of the Study:

To conduct a scoping review synthesizing the definitions and measurement of organizational resilience in healthcare literature.
To identify key components and strategies contributing to organizational resilience.
To inform the development of future interventions aimed at enhancing healthcare organizational resilience.

Main Methods:

Systematic literature search of PubMed and Scopus databases for articles on organizational resilience in healthcare.
Inclusion of all English-language sources published up to December 2023 that described or measured organizational resilience.
Screening of titles and abstracts, followed by information extraction from eligible articles.

Main Results:

A total of 97 articles were included in the review after screening 243.
Organizational resilience was consistently defined as a healthcare system's capacity to maintain function and objectives under stress.
Key components identified include reactive and proactive strategies, and reflection; four measures exist, with two validated.

Conclusions:

Further research is needed to validate and compare existing organizational resilience measures.
Investigating the impact of organizational resilience on quality of care and clinician well-being is a critical next step.
The field should expand its focus from individual clinician resilience to encompass broader organizational capacities.
