Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically identify the expressive vocabulary characteristics of 3- to 6-year-old Mandarin-speaking children with ASD.
  • To compare their vocabulary use with developmentally matched children with developmental delay (DD) and age-matched typically developing (TD) children.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of spontaneous language samples (10-min free play) from 21 children with ASD, 18 with DD, and 15 TD children.
  • Evaluation based on grammatical characteristics of Mandarin, focusing on word tokens, types, and type-to-token ratio (TTR).

  • All groups preferred verbs. Children with ASD had fewer content and function word types/tokens than TD children.

  • Language development in TD children is reflected in both standardized tests and spontaneous speech, unlike in children with ASD.
  • Qualitative differences in expressive vocabulary between DD and ASD groups suggest atypical vocabulary learning mechanisms in children with ASD.
