The discussion of bullying highlights the problem of witnesses not intervening to help a victim. This is a common occurrence, as the following well-publicized event demonstrates. In 1964, in Queens, New York, a 19-year-old woman named Kitty Genovese was attacked by a person with a knife near the back entrance to her apartment building and again in the hallway inside her apartment building. When the attack occurred, she screamed for help numerous times and eventually died from her stab wounds.

Investigate reasons for parents contacting a Medical Helpline.
Examine parental expectations during helpline calls.
Assess changes in parental situations post-telephone triage.

Main Methods:

Conducted semistructured interviews with 39 parents who contacted an out-of-hours Medical Helpline in Denmark.
Utilized Braun and Clarke's 6-step thematic analysis for qualitative data interpretation.

Main Results:

Parental uncertainty regarding symptom assessment led to stress and catastrophic thinking.
Parents sought validation and shared responsibility from healthcare professionals.
Competent and empathetic telephone triage empowered parents to manage children at home.

Conclusions:

Parental uncertainty and the need for reassurance are key drivers for contacting medical helplines.
Telephone consultations can effectively support parents in managing sick children at home.
Interventions improving symptom differentiation and normalizing childhood illness can reduce healthcare service reliance.
