Validation of MUISCA for Blockchain Interoperability: A Case Study in a Healthcare Environment

Abstract:
A common operation like the transfer of patients between medical institutions requires a secure exchange of information, usually between different information systems to improve their treatment and quality of life. To address their challenges, the interoperability of the healthcare ecosystem faces the challenge of securing medical information. Blockchain technology emerges as a key alternative to balance this ecosystem. Through smart contracts, agreements can be automated without intermediaries, favoring decentralization and therefore the transparency of health care data. However, the continuous development of blockchain technologies and the diversity of programming languages for smart contracts complicates communication between blockchains. The case study presented in this paper applies the MUISCA (Mechanism for UnIversal SmartContrAct) tool based on the use of Model Driven Engineering to generate specific smart contracts for different blockchains platforms. The research, conducted with 31 smart contracts experts, demonstrates that MUISCA facilitates the construction, reuse and adaptation of cross-platform smart contracts for healthcare environments, without compromising blockchain security.
