Artificial Intelligence (AI) offers significant opportunities for Participatory Health (PH) by enhancing diagnostics and patient empowerment. However, legal and privacy concerns present key challenges for AI integration in Participatory Health Informatics (PHI).

Background:

The internet has fostered a patient-centered approach, leading to Participatory Health (PH).
Participatory Health Informatics (PHI) leverages information technology for health.
Emerging Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques present advancements for PH.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the facilitators and opportunities of AI in PH.
To identify the challenges and barriers to AI adoption in PH.

Main Methods:

A literature review was conducted.
Articles published within the last 10 years were included.

Main Results:

38 articles were selected for review.
AI applications in PH include predictive analysis, healthcare data management, and conversational agents.
Key barriers identified are legal and privacy issues; opportunities include improved diagnostics and patient empowerment.

Conclusions:

Six main thematic areas of AI and PHI interaction were identified.
AI significantly impacts predictive analytics, healthcare data management, and conversational agents in PH.
Addressing legal and privacy concerns is crucial for realizing AI's potential in PHI, such as enhancing diagnostic accuracy and patient empowerment.
