Sex Education and Terminologies: A Gap Analysis in SNOMED CT and LOINC

This study examines labeling biases and metadata gaps within international medical terminologies SNOMED CT and LOINC regarding sexual identity, preferences, safety, and sex work. We identified shortcomings that include the lack of inclusive terminology for diverse gender identities, outdated classifications of sexual preferences, and insufficient recognition of sexual safety practices. Additionally, both systems inadequately represent sex work. The findings highlight the need for improved mapping capabilities to accurately reflect on the diversity of sexuality. We aim to promote a more inclusive and equitable approach to healthcare by addressing these biases.
