Purpose:
To investigate the effect and safety of fibrin glue-assisted pretreated lyophilized human amniotic membrane for retinal detachment caused by inferior retinal breaks.
Methods:
The retinal breaks were sealed with intraocular photocoagulation after the retina was reattached. The lyophilized human amniotic membrane grafts were soaked in hypertonic glucose solution, followed by immersion in fibrin glue A (pretreatment), then dipped into the perfluorocarbon liquid and used to cover the breaks, perfluorocarbon liquid implanted under the breaks. Finally, the edge of the breaks and grafts were covered with fibrin glue B.
Results:
Retinal reattachment was successful in all cases, and the median best-corrected visual acuity improved from 20/130 (Snellen) to 20/30 (Snellen) at the last visit. Lyophilized human amniotic membrane graft was displaced by fibrin contraction in one case after surgery, while the fibrin glue and grafts were stabilized in the other five cases. A little fibrin glue residue was detected in the macula area of 2 cases. One patient developed mild uveitis at 5 months after surgery but recovered after treatment.
Conclusion:
The fibrin glue-assisted pretreated lyophilized human amniotic membrane can achieve anatomical retinal reattachment for retinal detachment caused by inferior retinal breaks. Besides, this method can avoid intraocular tamponade of silicone oil and does not require postoperative position.
